Patty Meyers Interview with Bloodhound Photo Research Company
John, Patty, business, Bloodhound, has been in the business of existing image search for various clients of about 98 years … 98 years of dog it is. However, you have been doing this work since 1993. Bloodhound What happened?
Patty: I was doing the production management in a marketing company local and one of my responsibilities is supply and purchase of stock photography that became very frustrated when he would receive hundreds of inappropriate images of bodies main at the moment -. Superstock 4×5, The Image Bank, AMP, Tony Stone, and the stock market were the big dogs at the time.
That meant taking the rescue of a king of the responsibility that each original slide was valued at $ 1500/ea. And I still was not what he wanted. Knew to be a multitude of sources existing images, and began investigating the various smaller regional and subject specific agencies across the country. Eventually established a large database and decided it was a service that could be well received by the advertising agencies of other … and hound was born.
Juan: You find images for clients, but really not much more than they will. What are full service offering to customers?
Patty: Yes, initially we were about to locate hard to find stock photography, and although the company has evolved following being the main focus. But finding the image is only one aspect of what I do.
I get involved with open copyright and trademarks, obtaining models and property, media celebrity, and consultation on the work of derivatives and infringement cases. And as I have established an extensive list of photographers around the country and specialties, clients call me who need help with the tasks of photos outside the city. I have seen a surge in demand for footage, so I've been doing more searches that nature too.
John: Can you share your process with us?
Patty: Well, the trick to good action research is to obtain as much information as possible to the purchaser of art, or creative, as to what is exactly what they want. It is very important to understand not only the basic content but also the concept. See a design, obtaining the title, knowing what is what we want to communicate, actually helps to eliminate much of the second guessing, and also helps the art director better clarify its direction.
Once you have the specifications of the pictures, you need to ask about the budget, lap time, or any other foreign matter that may influence the selection of images. With that information, to determine the best resources and the best approach for the search. That could mean going online to various actions or the sites of the photographer, or go to print my library consists of 15 years. images taken from various print sources, or by calling around to several alternative suppliers. Finally, each search is different and requires a personalized approach.
John: I imagine that the process has changed significantly over the years. Can you fill us in what is different, and what remains the same?
Patty: Probably the biggest change has been the advent of the digital age and Photoshop as a basic element of the production process. Once the web catalogs stock replaced as the main source of visual content, search engines much more efficient process. Photoshop And after, it became more about finding items, instead of finding the photo perfect.
In the last 5-6 years I have witnessed another change and that's the way art directors produce campaigns. Previously, an art director to outline a draft a specific example in mind. Now, art directors work more with a concept or title and then go through the stock sites to see what works better visual. Have a general idea, but they are very open to other interpretations. I've been asked to make searches more and more conceptual, which I love because I get to the more creative input that only track a specific topic.
John: What do you like most about your job?
Patty: Of course, it's best to be involved in the photography industry, and work with creative people. I spend a lot time to stay aware of all the cool trends and educate myself on who is doing what is new and exciting.
As for real research, people often bloodhound come to have complicated the picture needs unusual or urgent. Therefore most fascinating projects presents some challenges. I love the "detective" aspect, the thrill of the hunt, and every search is different -. The subject may be under water, scientific, landscape, agriculture, funny, strange … never know when it occurs, what the day has in store for you.
Juan: What is your biggest challenge?
Patty: Convince art buyers and art directors that the service is well worth the money sophisticated. With search engines, art directors think they can easily find what they are looking to go to the major stock sites and connecting a few keywords. I do not understand is the experience needed to make a proper image and exhaustive search.
They also think because I can not find on Getty or Corbis, the image does not exist, aware of the many excellent sources of secondary image or alternative. But times are tough, and I'm finding a lot of adverse publicity agencies the use of any third party that are not absolutely necessary. Definitely I think we're seeing the tightening budgets and pressing deadlines that affect the quality of the images.
Juan: I guess you should look into the agencies, individual sites photographer, and search Google. Do everything you want, you must have some hobbies. You can share us the things that people do wrong, and things that people do right, to get your image seen by potential customers?
Patty: My only thought is that I'm surprised by how bad that some web sites are the photographer. My God, if you want to be taken seriously, at least in the commercial image market who needs a well designed website that reflects the quality of their work. Personally, I love to see more developing photographers active sections of values in place, especially if you have a specialty. I know it's a great financial investment, but ultimately could pay-off.
Juan: Do you see the Google searches and, specifically, Google Images search as taking a growing role in the search for the "Right" the image?
Patty: Not really. When complete work for advertising agencies, the quality found on a Google search is rare sufficient and is often impossible to trace the source. If I have a request that is as dark as a photo ID a damn rare species found only in the middle west, may be useful for more technical matters. However, for images of lifestyle is not a factor.
Juan: What are some of the more unusual requests that have been?
Patty: At the beginning of a bloodhound, we were asked to take ugly baby pictures. However, this requires going to the smaller brokers or directly to photographers as the major stock agencies only had photos of cute babies. And many of these companies had baby pictures of the photographer, who may or may not have thought were ugly. I had to be very careful how the request.
John: There was an overwhelming increase of images in recent years haystack. That is getting pretty big! Is the needle increasingly difficult to find?
Patty: No, I think it is more easy, no doubt that when there were only a phone and a list of values. And search engines are increasingly sophisticated, making a ton easier. I'm often going to sites like flickr.com, photoshelter.com and other photo sharing sites and come with a variety of interesting and innovative work. So that a researcher, more is better …
John: Does Micro shares in searches?
Patty: No, never. I do not support this aspect of the industry and I hope that traditional advertising will not accept either. I started using the copyright work without more frequently, because the quality has improved and customers often insist on it.
John: Where do you think the chances are for those of us getting our feet wet in motion?
Patty: lifestyle footage good model! Quality, lifestyle launched well-composed … and humorous content, it is always necessary. Getty In my opinion only, and to some extent, Thought Equity, are covering this content well and I love see more sources.
John: Is it part of price negotiations work?
Patty: Yes, an important part of it.
John: How prices changed over the past several years, and may predict that prices will go in the future?
Patty: Well, as anyone who has been in business knows, stock prices have been declining for quite some time. Certainly, there has been an explosion of visual content from the digital revolution and have the basic offer and demand theory goes.
Large securities firms are trying to compete with others that has remained relatively standard rates and are less flexible when negotiating. But it remains a buyers' market. I am optimistic renowned advertising agencies always appreciate the value of quality work and are committed to maintaining a level compensation that is fair to all parties.
The introduction of microstock royalty-free and certainly has not helped. Unfortunately, younger creative and account people entering the industry, who grew up with these models, their perceived value of an image is decreasing. This does not bode well for the professional shooter or target values of the rights administered.
John: Speaking of the future, what else can you tell us about it you think the future has in store for those of us who make our living in action?
Patty: I see that both the editorial and commercial markets moving closer and closer to values. If it's any consolation, I think the guys allocation will continue to take the hardest hit. However, as result, more of them, as well as amateur shooters are moving in the field of securities and industry is clearly growing more saturated.
Good news is that demand for existing materials do not disappear in the short term. My advice is to invest on a website simple and well designed to study and implement, sophisticated site optimization, and focus on a specific area of operations. A narrow focus, such as medical imaging, which is marketed to medical publications and advertising agencies / clients is a way to stand out and beat the competition.
John: If I were to advise someone who wants to license more of their images, what would that advice?
Patty: I love the idea of photographers individual grouping to market / licensing of their work, although some of the groups that have tried have not fared very well. A company like Digital Railroad had a job exceptional in it, but ended up closing.
At this point, I think some of the best and most original line of work is on Flickr and Photoshelter. Particularly if you are starting in the action, is a great way to get exposure and see what, if anything, sold. Getty now promotes a collection of Flickr, These are pictures taken from the page that they feel are marketable.
It seems more and more art buyers go to these alternative sites for innovative work. Basically, my advice is to get your images to image sources, many traditional and alternative possible, see the trends and keep your current job, and try to find a niche to be filled. That, and finding a partner with a real job.
John: Finally, do you really have something against cats?
Patty: I'm afraid so … with attitude, my dogs upset and never stop moving when it reaches the tail home.
