Pet Photography as a business
So I decided to try to capitalize on the growing demand for photo of a population bigger than ever pet owner! I applaud your decision.
The pet industry was exploding by leaps and bounds amazing even before the advent of the Internet. Availability pet products-based that used this new route for trade multiplied exponentially.
There are certainly a number of sites available where you can buy almost anything you can imagine for your furry housemates, but as a professional pet photographer, I like to stick to what I know and what I do best.
I take photos!
Now, you may tell yourself to take pictures too, and he does not qualify as a professional photographer Pet. What makes me so special? The answer is that people are willing to pay me to take pictures of them and I managed to sell a number of items related to pet photos as well.
However, that, for the sake of argument, say it takes a picture that captures a special quality of someone's pet that makes them ask if they can buy a copy. This is your introduction into the world of pet photography as a business, and this is where stagnate.
There are thousands, thousands, of books on how to make a start up business and all of them probably have something valuable to offer. It is necessary remember that most of these books are in the business of selling books, not knowledge. It's more like the "make zillions in Real Estate" infomercials that promise to quadruple their income in three days if you purchase your program. Well, the owner of the program will undoubtedly make millions and millions, but most part will come from selling you the program that does not necessarily using the information on the program!
Do not get me wrong! There are books out there that will of help to you. You only need to be careful what advice you really need to create a business of pet photography.
In the first place! Define yourself.
If you are mostly an artist or photographer? Yes, of course, can be both. The question is, do you want to create portraits Pets that are true works of art like painting portraits professionally done? It will not make much of a statement about himself and the artist as you on the subject of photography? Want to develop the ability to capture the special relationship between an owner and your pet? Or just want to go to the owner who wants a good picture frame to recognize that your pet is truly a beloved member of the family whose picture deserves to be placed in a position of honor in place of the mantle the rest of the family?
These are important questions that must be completed before starting. Not suggesting that you should choose a way to think about the other. Just be easier to create a viable business plan for yourself as a professional photographer if you become aware of your target audience and feel able to adapt to specific needs. You will find that once you determine the type of photography you wish to offer, the interview process between you and the potential client will most important part of the process.
It is imperative that you be able to understand the dynamics between the pet and owner. This will probably be an exercise purely intuitive hand and how the owner feels that a pet is not always the way the relationship is going to come through. Are they overly affectionate cheesy and adorable together? Do you like outdoor activities and violent games? They are quiet and sedentary together? These observations will give idea of what the owner expects see when they look at their interpretation of your bond with your pet. The portrait should reflect not only the personality of the pet, but the perception of the owners of that personality too.
Prices! I would suggest a rate which is not refundable. If someone is not willing to recognize that your time is valuable, then it is likely to be willing to pay for the package of photos later. A "rate of session" requires a commitment from the start a professional environment that encourages both sides. The owner realize they are paying for the privilege and recognize their obligation to the owner.
Franchise? With all the new avenues open to pet photographers, both entry level and professional level is inevitable that the issue of franchises will come up. There is a built-in safety net when they decide to go with an established franchise, both as ways in which they operate and the general public awareness of a well known name. " But this has a cost and I do not think is necessary for every photography business start-up pet. I encourage you to research as many as possible and carefully browse your own business plan see if it's worth the extra expense of a limited amount of security.
You can do this yourself. You can become a professional in-house photography Pet. You can become the "go to" photographer in his community. Just go out and make themselves known. Offer your services at the shelter local animals. Take the opportunity to do pro bono (free) photos for special occasions they have built in media coverage. Get integrated cards pin can be everywhere. The bottom line is … have fun with it! The best thing to do in life is finding something you enjoy doing and then find a way to make a living it.
