The photography industry Studio – Why is dead
Our industry is broken
I took some time to really look at the state professional photography industry today. I looked at objectively both as a photographer and as a customer to really try out the following address for industry.
Photographers know that industry is under great pressure from the sources in different ways and for different reasons.
One of the changes more radical in the photographic industry is the emergence of affordable high quality equipment. Anyone with a few big can go get a high end Nikon or Canon and hang out a shingle. Yesterday they were working at the Waffle House is now a photographer. In the past these new photographers were relegated to the background because they do not could produce the image quality requires that the consumer public. They were snap-shooters. Nothing more, nothing less.
Today snap shooters uses the same art of full-time professional photographers and delivery of the basic standard.
Because the amateur-professional does not have any of the General requirements (insurance, licensing, advertising and other business expenses such) that can easily undermine the full-time for a fixed point of view prices. Sometimes considerably. And his customer is happy because in your mind that you save a boatload of money.
This brings us to the next issue I see. We and industry did not get the point that the paradigm of the prices have changed. Due to the abundance of competent professionals of fans out there, time professional photographers full, regardless of how much you scream about it are at a distinct cost disadvantage.
Let me give an example.
I do a lot for the picture. If I go to take photos and post process them for sale. My impression is 5X7 15.50 (I have said it is too cheap for my colleagues).
At an event recently there was an amateur and professional must fire the same program and send images for sale. You could see the clear difference in the quality of the catch, exposure and the use of available light. Your prints 5×7 prints were $ 5.00. He sold more than $ 500 in that program.
Customers are looking for the big "V" word in deciding where to spend their money. VALUE is the name of the game. And the value is perceived by the customer is not defined by the photographer.
Even in a studio setting I have seen this paradigm the value of play out.
I was in a mall over the weekend. And all have shown our professional contempt for studies of the mall, but they really have looked at from the purely economic point of view?
The study I saw was a separate operation. None of the studies that we all know shopping. Their packages range from $ 12 to $ 36. "Portraits" were shot on green screen (which clearly not turn on properly.) They offer "hundreds of funds" and their production was done in a inkjet printer. No artistic photography any stretch of the imagination. They filled the store and was there 2.5 hours waiting for a hearing.
I had the opportunity to speak with an employee of this operation and gave me some ideas on their volume. In a weekend that will make the adjustments and 300 of 150 for the rest of the week setting 450 a week is a number amazing. Each facility has about 5 to 7 minutes. They have two camera positions to maintain that volume. They used a commercially available software package for chroma key.
Its aim is to sell some more than others 20.00.
If we set down and play with the numbers that can reach a rough estimate profitability of this operation.
450X20 gives $ 9000 gross a week and 36K a month.
The "conventional" study would not love having that amount of gross sales. And remember you are in a location with all expenses MALL attached to it.
The normal return for the owners of most study is that these are low-end customers who do not spend money. Right of reply that not spending $ 300 for a 8×10 but spend money. The problem is that they want "Images" and not "artistic heritage that is part of your family heritage of all times" They are a different client that we and industry have ignored. Moreover, that marginalize anyone going after this market, as they are harmful to our business. Nothing could be further from the truth.
We do not want the client. As professional photographers and artists that customers are below us. "We just have to educate them on what Quality is and will come around "is a statement I've heard a lot … so it is nonsense that will never come around to our mix of prices. So that we forget that customer.
36K per month … I would like that.
As an industry we are also guilty of our product positioning so as not to attract customers with a higher threshold value.
I looked at the top vertical market as an example. Most studies to announce this to the well as promote their other services. Go to most web sites that focus on high-level portraits are the same piano music quite boring with the same "Relic Family "snap lines. It seems that the attitude is we're going to overwhelm our class to get 17 years of age to buy at Abercrombie and Fitch, and prefer to be in line in the real world to get into portraits of the elderly.
The most successful higher education have guided his portrayal of marketing for this segment of the population. Succeed. Many of us do and we wonder why we are not receiving high-level business. We are positioning our advertising to a market frankly hates pretty traditional piano music.
We need to look to our customers and be more responsive to their needs. Have a few acid processed images on your website does not make you a portrait studio in the elderly. It's more about attitude and the attitude that we projected is "siesta."
I think for the photography industry to wake up, have some important issues to address. We must change our paradigm of pricing they simply are not getting customers in the study. Change our attitude. Most customers want large images are not family heirlooms. They want to be excited and not bored to tears experience in the study
I think that if we start not going to be well on our way to recovery from an industry big time.
