Stately homes in the Lake District
Here in the Lake District and Cumbria our most important buildings are of a different nature to those of many other parts of the country. Many started out as a small castle, built here in the region as a buffer between the more populated parts of England marauders and medieval Scotland. Some were simple fortified towers, now integrated into private farms scattered around the East County, and others have developed over centuries in large stone buildings. Some cottages "holiday> in the lake district can claim to be part of some of these beautiful buildings.
Many of the Lakes and Cumbria important houses are smaller in scale than those found elsewhere. We have our massive monument to elegance, but you can also visit several examples of more modest properties. This is a different experience of "walking along-the-carpet special ',' don't-read-about- string 'type of property, as it often is difficult to imagine transported back in time, living in silence.
Unlike much of the country, many of our stately homes and castles remain private or charitable, rather than the National Trust or English Heritage. This has its advantages, as often personal effects of the previous owners remain on display, and the interiors are not the unreal perfection perfected.
Our biggest properties are Muncaster Castle in the west coast and Levens Hall, Holker Hall and Castle Sizergh, particularly in the south of the province.
Muncaster Castle is in a site very, very old. The buildings first appeared here in Roman times, and these foundations support a Pele tower in the middle of the thirteenth century. Each generation Pennington family has added and improved ownership, and is now a very large and impressive house. Gold leaf highlights, leather coverings, furniture from the beginning, Pictures and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. This is a great place for young people to fulfill their fantasies of Harry Potter with oak four-posters and a huge library, extraordinarily octagonal high ceiling, followed by a visit to some friends of Hedwig the Owl Centre. Muncaster is home to the annual Festival of Fools, the reputation of Blue Peter, and promotes itself as a ghost hunting. Opens mid-March. Closed Saturdays.
Levens Hall near Kendal, is a large house that began simply as a Pele tower defense, but was extended to the residence of a gentleman in the sixteenth century. Retains its character of great Elizabethan, with heavy oak cladding wood, plaster ceilings, carved oak furniture and "wallpaper" embossed leather. The gardens, which were presented to the late seventeenth century, are grade 1 on the list. The most memorable thing is the garden landscaping, but also have a garden, an herb garden, rose garden and beautiful borders. Opens April. Closed on Fridays and Saturdays.
Holker Hall in CARK in Cartmel, near Grange-over-Sands, "is a pink color, the neo-Elizabethan, Victorian mansion. Home replaced the original Elizabethan current that was burned in the nineteenth century century, and reconstruction echoes that style with oak panels linenfold plaster ceilings and molding. As all Victorian reproductions of older styles, the effect is somehow more noble and more theatrical than the original. This is a mansion of the species larger, in stunning Lake District. Opens mid-March. Closed Saturdays.
Sizergh Castle, near Kendal, is a truly splendid National Trust property. Like many houses of Cumbria, which started in medieval times as a defensive tower. Strickland's family made him a magnificent house in the sixteenth century the century, adding more in the Georgian and Victorian periods. There's plenty to see and remember here, a medieval banqueting hall with wood old foot-wide, original weaponry, Elizabethan oak panels, carved overmantels, exquisite portraits and four poster beds. The span of history covered makes this a great place to take kids to show them how big houses have changed over the centuries. Opens mid-March, only days ago. Closed Saturdays.
Dalemain is a smaller house, but important, however, near Ullswater. It is a surprising visit, like the shell of Georgia is about just that which contains a house that is more Elizabethan and medieval Georgia. Some rooms, such as the lounge with stunning hand-painted Chinese paper talking about the time later, but the oak paneling, ceilings and open-newel note of the previous step.
Hutton in the Forest, north of Penrith, is not as well known as it should be. Built in the former Royal Forest of Inglewood – and, indeed, the resident is still Lord Inglewood – Hutton in the Forest "is linked to the enigmatic story of Gawain and the Green Knight, and a knight of the roundtable, which may or may not have lived near here. Hutton also began as a defensive tower Pele – as the Scots have given the architecture of the region! – With additions of many subsequent periods. The original tower is probably the most memorable part of Hutton, with its thick walls and impossible display of weapons. There is also a wonderful Elizabethan long gallery and lounge designed by Anthony Salvin in the late nineteenth century. Open evenings only March 31 – April 11, after April 28 for the season. Open Wednesday, Thursday, Sunday and Monday holidays.
Mirehouse, west of Keswick, has a strong character Lake District, overlooked by Skiddaw, with rolling grounds Bassenthwaite Lake. Has links poetry in abundance, beautiful gardens and access to small Church on Lake St. Bega. The house itself, founded in the late seventeenth century, with additions by the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, is smarter than large ones. His fame is its extensive collection of works from the fifteenth / sixteenth century writer, Francis Bacon, and letters from Tennyson, Carlyle, Southey, Wordsworth and Constable. We will go to Mirehouse in good day, so you can enjoy the rhododendron walk, the forest and the road to the lake. Open late March, Wednesday and Sunday evenings only (and Friday August).
Brantwood Coniston water views and was the home of John Ruskin. It is not easy to summarize the contribution to Ruskin Victorian thought, but it was deep and radical extending to the philosophy, art, philanthropy and social commentary. The house has a video Ruskin, a series of portraits, drawings of Ruskin, copies of paintings by Turner I loved, examples of Ruskin lace and pottery and some furniture. The site has wonderful lake views, best seen in the café terrace. Open days.
Cumbria smaller houses are often quite charming. Try these for size …
Townend, in Troutbeck, near Windermere is the house of a farmer of the seventeenth century. It is built in vernacular style Lagos, with round chimneys and exterior features white painted kitchen floors marked narrow passages and a small staircase, twisting. This house atmosphere has a lot of dark oak furniture, richly carved by a resident of the nineteenth century. One of my favorite places in Lagos. Opened in February and March for guided tours only, otherwise from April. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Dove Cottage in Grasmere, needs no introduction. This small seventeenth century country house has achieved fame as the home of William Wordsworth from 1799 to 1808. This is another house in the vernacular, with whitewashed walls, a slate roof, small windows barred with oak shutters, slate floors and oak and oak panels. Coleridge, Southey De Quincy and were regular visitors to Dove Cottage, and Quincy took over the house after Wordsworth tenantship left. The museum is worth visiting for their letters, books, Pictures and memories. Dove Cottage is extremely popular with domestic and international tourists, and only a small number of people allowed in each time, so it's a good idea to go earlier this year to avoid crowding. Open daily.
Rydal Mount, near Ambleside, is another house associated with Wordsworth, who lived here from 1813 until 1850 – much longer than he lived in the most famous Dove Cottage. Originally a modest farm worker sixteenth century house, the house was extended to mid-eighteenth century to form a family house respectable proportions. There are excellent portraits of William and Mary and Dorothy Wordsworth much Wordsworth the furniture and books. Open daily March 1.
Hill Top, Near, Hawkshead, was the home of Beatrix Potter, bought with the proceeds of their books 1905. Most of this cottage is the end of the seventeenth century, with a small extension built by Beatrice. This is the typical construction of Lagos, with walls masonry, a stone ceiling, flag stone flooring and panels. The interiors are exactly as they were in time of Beatrice, she bequeathed her entire property and land portfolio for the National Trust. There is a small, but beautiful cottage garden. Hill Top is very popular with domestic and international visitors and can be very busy. Only small number of people allowed in each time, so it can be a long wait for entry. We recommend visiting early in the season. Open from mid-February. Closed Friday except Good Friday.
Many small farms in Cumbria are in relatively remote areas, at the end of the long and narrow roads. Parking can be tight, and they tend not to have tea rooms and stores, so our advice is to arrive early and take a picnic. They are all very well situated gardens and views.
