BBC iPlayer
Development
The original iPlayer service was launched in October 2005, to a five-month long the trial of five thousand broadband users until February 28, 2006. The iPlayer was criticized for the delay in the launch, rebranding and the cost to taxpayers BBC canon, as it had not been finished product released after four years of development. A new iPlayer service better then had another very limited user test which began on November 15, 2006.
The iPlayer received approval from the BBC Trust, on April 30, 2007, and a version beta for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 was released at midnight on July 27, 2007, when it was announced that only a fixed number of people who could enroll in the service, with a controlled increase in users during the summer.
The BBC also has been criticized for saying that the iPlayer 'launch' 27 July 2007, when what was offered was simply an extension of the beta version of an open beta, support more users in a controlled manner. This was done to allow reports, British ISPs and the BBC to assess the impact of iPlayer traffic on the Internet in the UK, although Channel 4 and ITV has recently launched two similar services.
The open beta built a media player, an electronic programming guide (EPG) and the client specially designed discharge and allows the downloading of TV content by computers assigned to an IP address in the UK-based for use up to thirty days after emission. However, it was only available for users of Windows XP.
This was a controversial decision by the BBC, resulting in a request to be released on 10 Downing Street website e-petition. The petition reached 16,082 signatures on August 20, 2007. The Government's response was:
… Trust noted the strong public demand for the service will be available in a variety of operating systems. The BBC Trust made it a condition of approval of services to the charter of the BBC iPlayer is available to users with a wide range of operating systems and is committed to ensure that the BBC meets this demand as soon as possible. Progress will be measured by the BBC earlier this month, every six and publish the results.
On October 16, 2007, the BBC announced a strategic relationship with Adobe, which would bring a limited release, the transmission of only iPlayer for Mac and Linux users and Windows users who are unable or unwilling to use the iPlayer download service. The streaming service was launched on 13 December 2007. Most programs can only be seen up to seven days after issuance, as opposed to the thirty days provided by the download service.
Since January 2008 has provided support to Mozilla Firefox (Microsoft Windows platform) for downloading content.
Before The iPlayer has been launched yet, it was announced that the BBC, with ITV and Channel 4, had the intention to launch a new video on demand platform, provisionally called kangaroo. Kangaroo is intended to complement the on-demand video services that these channels were already offering, including the iPlayer, making the programs available once your "catch up" period expires. The Kangaroo project was finally abandoned after being blocked by the Competition Commission in early 2009.
Following an agreement between the BBC and cable TV provider Virgin Media, iPlayer service was made available through service provider to the letter. The cable service launched on April 30, 2008, and maintains the appearance of the BBC iPlayer program.
In response to a Freedom of Information Act, the BBC said that the iPlayer will cost $ 6 million to develop up to April 8, 2008.
On August 23, 2008, a new, series stacking, it was announced. This feature was first launched on September 13, 2008, and allows viewers to watch programs selected earlier in the series until the series has ended, with a limit of up to thirteen weeks after the first issue. Not all programs that are part stack, however. The BBC Trust has enabled 15% of the content provided as part of the service stack, soaps, news bulletins and programs based on the review can not be stacked, and the programs that contain material of a legal nature, such as Crimewatch.
On 19 December 2008 The BBC released as part of the role of Labs iPlayer, iPlayer Google Desktop for Mac and Linux. This made the download service away from the previous distribution model P2P-based model and HTTP downloads.
On April 20, 2009, joined the BBC HD streams and downloads of some contained in the iPlayer. There are plans to extend the current HD devices such as the Virgin Set Top Box, but no date has yet been established. An application for BBC iPlayer for the PlayStation 3 was announced by Sony in August 2009 and was released on September 1, 2009, together with the 3.0 firmware update to coincide with the launch of the PlayStation 3 is not fattening.
Another version of iPlayer was launched in late 2009 as a "channel" for the Nintendo Wii. This only shows low-resolution videos of the BBC shows up to 7 days after their release on television.

Download
One of the main features of the service was the original download iPlayer using the peer-to-peer to allow file sharing large video (ie TV) to scale effectiveness. Once downloaded, content can only play inside the iPlayer or Windows Media Player 10 or 11, and subject to digital rights management. In December 2008, the BBC moved to an Adobe AIR-based client that the content downloaded via HTTP instead of P2P. The new system replaces the Windows DRM system with Adobe itself. (DRM) software to avoid being copied to other media (for example, another computer or CD-ROM). In addition, the DRM allows the BBC to decide how much time programs are still watchable. Programs will be available for download for seven days following broadcast. Once the program is downloaded the user will have thirty days to start watching. Once a user begins watching a program, which will continue to be available for the next seven days. These limitations do not apply to users used streaming online service.
Criticism was leveled at the use of Kontiki Kservice iPlayer, the application of peer-to-peer following the use of bandwidth users, even after the iPlayer has been closed, although this could be controlled with the software options available. Because of this, users may have been charged by your Internet service provider for exceeding their download limits or fair usage policy. However, since the new customer is introduced in December 2008 Kontiki P2P system has not been used.
The client also provides an electronic programming guide (EPG) with listings of the last seven and programs next seven days, the selection of a program that has already been issued will begin downloading immediately while not yet shown you can download as soon as they have been. Currently it is not possible to schedule a series to be downloaded automatically when the next episode is available, but the BBC hopes to be available in a later version.
Online streaming service

The BBC took the Christmas season to trumpet the new service the "motto … Making the unmissable inescapable, and the service out of beta on December 25, 2007. In addition, seasonal specialties were followed regularly for entire week of Christmas plugs iPlayer. The transmission version iPlayer offers replays of programs broadcast by all TV channels from the BBC over the past seven days. Programs are available in all national television channels BBC and the BBC programs shown on S4C Wales. Because the grant licensing agreements, international programs and some private or films produced are not available on iPlayer.
"IPlayer 2.0

The beta ran alongside the existing facilities until July 3, 2008, when a new version replaces it .. Later versions have launched a choice of streaming high quality video.

Since March 2009 the BBC launched the new transmission of 1500kbps Player version that provides quality images close to the TV, even when in full screen.

On December 22, 2009, the BBC Trust rejected the request FetchTV release product. The new guidelines were introduced in October , 2009 to formalize the prohibition to third building their own products iPlayer.
Game Consoles
BBC iPlayer as shown in the Nintendo Wii
In March 2008 an official Python script was released to allow original Xbox running XBMC access the BBC iPlayer.
On April 9, 2008, the BBC iPlayer was made available to transmit video content on the Wii game console via the Internet Channel. This was made possible by recoding the iPlayer to use Flash 7 instead of Flash 9. However, the fall 2009 update Wii Internet Channel iPlayer result in longer working on updating console. The BBC's iPlayer in the form of a dedicated channel for Wii was released on November 18, 2009. The BBC iPlayer Channel can be downloaded free from the Wii Shop Channel, the service is only available to UK residents.
Following the launch of Wii content, iPlayer was not officially available in the standard iPlayer website through the PlayStation 3 browser. An officer was created hack one week after the launch of Wii content, combining Javascript, CSS and the user-masking agent to mimic Internet browser on the Wii Channel, in while allowing users to access the PlayStation 3 iPlayer to visit the official website through their browser. While the BBC was "impressed" that said it was not "the best possible iPlayer proposition for that console, and as the PS3 is on its roadmap, which would" investigate the optimum profile video and the approach to the browser "that at the time. Since December 2008, the PlayStation 3 was officially supported directly through the iPlayer website.
IPlayer widget official request was provided in the PS3 system software 3.0 released on September 1, 2009. However, this is not more than a URL link to the iPlayer site, despite the PS3 now represents 6% of all traffic to iPlayer, making it the third most popular platform for accessing the service behind personal computers (85%) and mobile phones or iPods (7%).
An agreement between the BBC and Microsoft have been still can not be achieved by Microsoft's strategy of charging for all content in its Xbox Live platform is incompatible with the mission of public service in the BBC. Microsoft wants to ensure that only those who pay for Xbox Live Gold accounts can access additional content services. The BBC can not charge the British public for access the iPlayer is already included in the license fee.
BT Vision
On 27 May 2008 BT started charging customers for BT Vision 3 per month for watching the BBC play, a reduced version of iPlayer to offer a more limited schedule of 30 hours the BBC a week. A spokesman for BT said that its customers had previously been able to view BBC content on demand due to "technical issues". A BBC spokesman said: "In line with other TV platforms where BBC programs are made available on demand, the BBC requires that all content public service must be accessible via the lowest cost subscription level. In this case, it is BT Replay. "
From on April 1, 2009, the package of reproductive value was included in all packages BT Vision, but is still available as a file, 2.93 per month, the package to non-subscribers.

Televisions
In December 2009, Cello Electronics Marks & Spencer launched the brand of TV iViewer. Internet television is enabled, which allows viewing of online content, including BBC iPlayer, which has its own physical button on the remote control, but the BBC iPlayer HD won be available until 2010.
January 11 2010, the BBC announced that BBC iPlayer is built directly into TVs that will be widely available in the UK in a few months. Samsung Electronics became in the first major manufacturer to officially announce that their television will be updated to include full access to the iPlayer via their Internet Service @ TV.
Mobile Platforms
iPhone and iPod Touch
BBC iPlayer 2.0 beta as shown on the iPhone
On March 7, 2008, a beta version of Apple iPhone and iPod Touch was released. The version of the first time the service was available in portable devices which allows streaming over a wi-fi. EDGE connectivity on the iPhone, however, is not compatible because it is too slow for streaming video.
A security breach was discovered earlier in this content tailored for the iPhone allowing users to avoid DRM, download files and play them on alternative devices. The BBC closed the trick, March 13, 2008. Until June 2008 the ongoing battle followed a tit for tat progress. A Ruby feat was followed by the introduction BBC XOR encryption of parts of the downloaded files, if a real iPhone was not detected. The BBC had specially designed web bugs, the sender controls and limits download bit, so that only devices that exhibit this behavior, ie a real iPhone would be capable of transmitting video content. A cycle of changes and reverse engineering has followed so that the various currents for both the iPhone and Flash streaming service can now be downloaded without need for decryption or circumvention of DRM. This has been possible thanks to several programs that can effectively simulate a flash or RTMP client and an iPhone.
Nokia N96 phone
On September 18, 2008, the BBC announced that a version will be available for mobile phone Nokia N96 as a download service to allow viewers to watch programs, even when away from Wi-Fi or 3G networks. The release date is fixed 1 October 2008.
Shortly after the September 9, 2008, even before the Nokia N96 BBC download service had gone live, a method to download and play independently the N96 iPlayer running on other mobile 3GP, Linux and MacOS was published.
Additional Mobile devices
iPlayer has been updated to include streaming of radio and television as well as extended to a variety of cell moving in early December 2008, including the Samsung Omnia, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1, Sony Ericsson C905, Sony Ericsson W995 and Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.
There is also an official request, but functional for the Google Android platform called BeebPlayer.
Receipt and approval
Before the launch in December 2007, the BBC had hoped the service would reach half a million customers across its first six months. This proved to be an underestimate, 3.5 million were streamed or downloaded programs in the first three weeks alone. The Guardian describes these figures as "very promising."
In its first year, 2008, growth continued at an impressive pace. In April, the iPlayer accounted for around five percent of all traffic in the UK, and was about five million page views per day in June. In December, it was announced more than 180 million programs have been viewed on iPlayer since its launch. During the BAFTA in May, the iPlayer won the "Innovation Interactive Service Platform Awards, beating out Channel 4's "great multitude of art 'and the Bebo' Open Media Platform." The transmission of programs constitutes the lion's share success, outnumbering downloads eight-one in January 2008 and 97:3 in October 2009.
In October 2009, revealed that the site experienced 70000000 requests and moved seven petabytes of data. Television formed around two thirds of all applications, with the radio up the rest. Most television images transmitted from pre-recorded, while in direct radio is preferred. Eighty-five percent of applications were from equipment, with much of the rest comes from iPods, iPhones and PS3 (for a total of 15 platforms). The most popular television program of 2009 was Top Gear, and radio More popular was the presentation of the ashes.
The success of the iPlayer can be up to a "long tail" effect, with users searching for specialized programs, outreach programs on digital channels are doing very well. However, it is expected to change with the [quoted required] introduction of programs to download booking in advance, and automatically downloading the next episode.
The iPlayer demands met with some concern and criticism from ISPs in the UK due to additional bandwidth, the service requires. Several Internet providers, in particular, Tiscali, have called on the BBC to partially fund the network upgrades to cope with the iPlayer traffic. The BBC responded by saying that the iPlayer was driving the demand for broadband subscriptions.
DRM criticism
During 2005 and 2006 trials iPlayer, DRM system based on Microsoft's Windows Media DRM, which led to concerns about the availability platform, as this technology only is available for Windows XP. However, some users have gotten it to work with Vista compatibility options. The BBC notes that "is committed to Platform neutrality and committed to making its content as widely as possible "and that while the initial test using a Microsoft-based technology, are constantly seeking new technologies that allow them to relax the restriction: Ashley Highfield, then director of BBC Future Media and Technology, explained that "we have always starts with the platform that reaches more people and then spread from there. "They also note that not all content distributed through the iPlayer will be subject to DRM – live streaming content, for example, does not need the same level of control, it probably means that players Mac OS X and Linux could be developed with a limited range of content. However, a project has started for the iPlayer to work with other platforms through the Wine project.
On August 14, 2007, the Free Software Foundation organized a demonstration outside the BBC Television Centre. Pedro de la FSF T. Brown blasted the BBC for what he said was a break of the earlier tradition: the insistence that for the first time, viewers of the BBC would be forced to use the patented technology for watching the BBC.
On February 18, 2010, the BBC iPlayer updated SWF verification layer that closes the door on open source implementations of time messaging protocol actual transmission.
Overseas availability
The fact that the BBC television production paid for the TV license fee in the United Kingdom and rights agreements with third parties, means that BBC iPlayer TV shows are officially accessible only from IP addresses assigned to the entities of the United Kingdom. However, most radio programs can be universal access, with the exception of programs such as emissions of certain sports that are affected by rights issues.
TV license
A TV license is not necessary for viewing in the iPlayer after they have been issued. The exception is simulcast the 'Live', which is accessible through and played in the iPlayer site, where eight of the BBC channels are broadcast at about the same time on television and therefore a valid TV license is required. The controversy is whether consumers should pay for a TV license to watch live when most programs are available for free on iPlayer hours after they were issued.
