Myths and Misconceptions – Portrait of the Artist
Introduction
I would love to personally meet and photograph all my songs, but for reasons economic reasons, I work mainly from photographs taken by others.
They show me what the subject looked at a frozen moment in time and a set of lighting conditions. I have no other knowledge of the subject.
The camera does not lie!
Throughout most of our time, our ancestors were accustomed to seeing the drawings and paintings. There was nothing else.
A mid-nineteenth century, everything changed when images photography began to be available to the general public. History records the failure of the first people to believe that they looked like their photographic portraits. It took little time for pictures to be accepted as faithful reproductions.
Today, I really think that the camera does not lie. Accordingly, we tend not to see or challenge anything abnormal in a photograph. This is somewhat ironic, given that advances in digital technology, the camera is now much time!
By contrast, when we look at pictures or paintings, which now question everything we see.
Meanwhile, the goal of portrait artist remains (as it always has been), not to produce an exact copy, but to capture an image of a subject, though subtle amplification characteristics fundamental and the suppression of others. When you draw the eyes of a woman who exaggerate the breadth of its students, and highlighting the feet of his cock.
I had a client not long ago time complained that his friend had drawn with a slight squint. I was able to demonstrate that his friend's right eye was clearly narrower than the left in all reference photos supplied. The point is that the client does not question the accuracy of their photos, but challenged my drawing.
So here is my first problem.
Whatever you draw or paint invites challenge, and abnormalities in the reference picture can be increased without knowing it, in my artwork. In essence, I can only hope to produce a resemblance to the person in the photograph, but sometimes I am responsible if the picture has distorted the image the subject.
The camera does not lie!
Artists work of imagination
As a portraitist who attempt to produce an accurate image of matter, which of course would expect to be exempted from the need of a creative imagination. However, we often find that customers expect me to know, or be able to see things that are not in their photographs.
I know what I mean "eye" and "mouth" look like, and how draw. But I can not imagine what "his" mouth feel that if I can not see the detail that in a photograph. I also the image of the form of "your" nose profile if they only have a picture of her from the front.
So here is my second problem.
Abstract artists created from of his imagination. Portrait artist copy of the life (or photographs). They have always copied.
No one can guess accurately makeup missing details the face of an individual. No artist has been able to do this.
As a camera, I am able to create a representation of an object 2 dimesional in 3 dimensions, but can not run the process in reverse. I can not look at a picture and build a 3-dimensional model of the subject in my head, like a person can do emerging real camera has taken his picture.
Summary
If ever commission an artist to produce a portrait from a photograph, please remember:
That can only draw or paint what they see.
They have no knowledge of the subject: only ever know what can see or are told by the customer.
poor photographs always translate into poor artwork. poor art not selling.
