Soviet Impressionism art comes in many shapes and Dmitri Baltermants is recognized as the best Soviet photographer of the 20th century. As the photographer main photo editor Ogonyok, one of the oldest Russian weekly magazines, and as official photographer of the Kremlin, Baltermants use film to capture images and events that mere words can not express. During a span of five decades, captured on film the life, times, and the spirit of Soviet people and the nation was built.
Dmitri Baltermants was born May 13, 1912, in Warsaw, Poland. His father served in the Imperial Russian Army and was killed in the First World War. Years later, Baltermants graduated from Moscow State University to become a math teacher, but fell in love photography and began a career in photojournalism.
During WW II Baltermants covered the battle of Stalingrad, the battles of the Army Red in Ukraine, and the march to Berlin in 1945. He was wounded twice.
Like his fellow photographers covering the Red Army during the war, pictures Baltermants were always censored by Soviet authorities in order to select only the photos illustrating the positive side of service in their effort to help morale. Some of his most captivating photos were suppressed, and were not made available to the public until the 1960's.
One of the images Baltermants' most famous, called "Grief" shows a Nazi slaughter of 1942 in the Crimean town of Kerch. It shows the pain of the village women in their search the bodies of their loved ones. A powerful saturated the sky above, burned during photo printing, makes the image more dramatic.
Baltermants' work during World War II stands out as especially important, as their pictures show the tragedy of war so completely and with the truth that have become symbols of a profound humanism. However, the tragedies of war set a single period in the life Baltermants.

For the Soviets, this was a time of major projects construction, space exploration, new leaders and new contacts with other nations. Baltermants was commissioned to cover all these important events in the Soviet government and society, and took all these events in the film.
During this post World War II era Baltermants provided photographic report more vivid, interesting and comprehensive report on the Soviet people rediscovery of foreign countries, building giant power plants, and the emergence of the Soviet nation in the atomic age.

It was a brilliant interpreter of the idea of "socialism triumphant." Film was Baltermants' artist canvas, and his collective body of Soviet photography became his contribution to Russian Impressionism and contemporary art forms in Russia.
In the final period of his life, Baltermants worked less. However, he continued photographing the country's leaders. It was in these pictures discovered a new Baltermants. From his files, images collected almost half a century of portraits of figures of power. This was the "anatomy" of Soviet power. It was during this period that he realized that he and his camera Baltermants witnessed the transition of a nation, and it was his view that the people of the nation saw and remember.
Dmitri Baltermants died in 1990.
It was also in 1990 that the Russian government authorized the production of a photographic portfolio to celebrate the life and work of Dmitri Baltermants. A total of twenty-five portfolios were produced, each with a set of treasured photographs. Each image was marked with the photographer's original seal and signed by Baltermants Tatiana, the daughter of Dimitri, on behalf of his father. Each set was placed in a black silk box with Portfolio a certificate of authenticity. And, without photographic evidence of these aspects will be negative, except for purposes of copyright and exposure.
Now, these limited photo editing portfolio to rival the finest Russian art in their historical value and emotional impact.
