Focus on Art Shay
Headquarters in Chicago, famous photographer, Art Shay, a nimble 88, collects his thoughts on the collection, collectors and how their world-class collection was to be picked
A few months ago I bought in a couple of books through distance phone call along a very nice lady named Florence who owns a bookstore in Highland Park, Illinois, called titles, Inc. that sells rare books. Having never been in the Prairie State and are not familiar with their geography, to assume all the cities in Illinois, near Chicago, and Florence asked him if he had something for one of my favorite writers, Nelson Algren, author of "A Walk on the Wild Side "(Published in 1956 and set in New Orleans, but many of the stories Algren -" Man With the Golden Arm "and my favorite, "Never Come Morning" – will take place in the Windy City.)
Florence paused and then said, "Is Algren you asking because my husband and I were friends with him? "
"I had no idea," he said, completely taken by surprise. "I do not even know his name."
"It Shay" Florence said. "My husband is the photographer Art Shay. "
Those who believe in coincidence – and even those who do not, and are sure that all good things happen for a reason, because cosmic forces at work – you can imagine my shock and rare moment of joy!
That is because Article Shay – One of whose photos are on the jacket of the first edition of "A Walk on the Wild Side" – is one of the greatest photographers of the last century and this, too. Even if you do not know of art by name, you probably know photos you have taken: PERMITTED hand extends from Jim Brosnan a wall covering of vines in the Wrigley Field (as the arm of Arthur in the lake holding Excalibur) to make a catch; Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa braggart of a podium with his own image as a background giant in the style of "Citizen Kane" National Guard point ahead of Conrad Hilton Chicago Hotel (Cheerfully decorated with "Welcome Democrats") before facing the Protesters angry at the Democratic Convention in 1968 (originally taken from Time magazine, but the art says he does not use, opting instead to use shot by a tank and soldiers in a cloud of tear gas as half of the home page of history, and a swarm of young people with a statue in Grant Park as full page closer), and any number of others. Art has captured stunning images of some of the Americans held the majority of our era – John F. Kennedy, a young Marilyn Monroe and Hugh Hefner and Muhammad to Marlon Brando Ali – and take many wonderful photos of Nelson Algren, the people of Chicago and many other subjects.
Now, 88 years, is a native of Art Bronx and served as chief navigator aboard a B-24 Liberator flying missions in Europe during the Second World War (and twice helped lead the entire Eighth Army Air Force – 1,200 aircraft – to Berlin a week after D-Day), but also sailed out of action for the first flight from Guam to Tokyo after the Japanese surrender, which General Douglas MacArthur's personal advancement to Tokyo to organize GHQ and occupation.
Art photography – both black and black and color – have appeared on and / or on the covers of popular magazines in the region of America during the last six decades: from life to look for Esquire, Sports Illustrated for Saturday Evening Post, Playboy to Chico's life. I absolutely love them, and invite you to check out and see some Images Art at the Museum of Contemporary Photography Web site (collections.mocp.org) and read his illustrated essay "The Convention Democrat – Chicago 1968 "a swans.com
Art is greatly admired by photographers, collectors, and a legion of fans who love damn big picture. Not that he sits on his laurels and play golf all day: He is making pure art with your camera.
For example, the musician Rock of Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins) recently hired art of shooting a three-year project that included the creation of 41 new Corgan songs for some albums possible new plans to market itself. Art explained that Corgan, "an astute businessman and the artist that I can not believe that flurry of tabloid interest in her romantic life has with young artists famous and beautiful ", had the idea of documenting the evolution of the albums after reading the art book "Nelson Algren's Chicago" in one sitting. Corgan study is only three miles from the house of Herbert in Deerfield, so that only drops of Art in a day-long trials with digital Nikon, Canon and Leica increasingly confident film that is suitable for both artists. (In fact, Leica Camera Inc. has just made art using your new digital camera M9 for the rest of the project. Art also recalls with pride being the first professional photographer to try the Canon 7 with 0,095 giant lens. the He has the most uncanny ability to remember every camera, lens and exposure used in his paintings: "I did my portrait of Liz Taylor Candlelight Ambassador East with this fantastic 0,095 lens: 1/30th of a second in 0095. What a lens! What a woman! ")
Art is also a great and prolific writer – the author of dozens of books on a variety of topics, all with his picture: "Album of an Era: Unconventional Words and Pictures of the twentieth century, "Art Shay" Chicago accent, "" Chicago, Nelson Algren, "" Couples, "" Animals ", of children's books (" What happens in the circus " "What happens when you turn the gas", "How does it feel to be a firefighter" and many more) and sports ("40 common mistakes in tennis and how to correct "and the titles like golf and racket). Some of the older books are bylined" Arthur Herbert, "if you want to search for them online.
Having had the great honor and pleasure to correspond with the item, I can attest the fact that he is as "real" with your feet on the ground and captivating as the photos you take. I am also delighted to say that he has kindly written a hot story, often funny and very exciting for AmeriCollector.com, below …
Finally, if you want to give yourself or lover photography in your life a gift, Florence Shay (who writes an outstanding blog that any bibliophile will enjoy: It is in tr.im / Florence has copies of Most recent books Art ", an album of age" and "Couples", "Animals", "Art Shay: Chicago Accent" and "Nelson Algren's Chicago, you can purchase signed by the art. ("Couples" and "animals" are very popular sellers.) Contact Florence is through your blog.

A photographer looks at his work – and their collectors
By Art Shay
My favorite doctor of graphic satire before entering the lists is, of all people, Honoré Daumier, who roamed the streets and courthouses in Paris 150 years ago as I did in Chicago in recent years fifties and sixties more: Daumier caricature with his pencil, I with my camera caricature – the two instruments. wicked Henry James, again all people attributed the swelling of journalism by Daumier and George Cruikshank to increased pictorial satire.
"The current time is in this case mainly the power of journalism … "James wrote prophetically in a trial in 1893 Daumier.
My entire work is based on an observation from James in the same essay: "A society has to be old before it is critical and must be critical before they can enjoy playing of the inconsistencies of an instrument as irrelevant as the indefatigable pen "- or in my case, mutatis mutatis: my Leica.
I telephone conversation with the great Paul Berlanga, chief of staff of the Stephen Daiter Gallery (Chicago is better) and my friend of the last 30 years. Paul has almost single-handedly guided my photos by the side of the $ 350 money I was glad to command for vintage prints that were made by myself after filming a story, for example, Life magazine to an average of about $ 1,500 per 11 x 14. When I showed about 80 copies at the Galerie Albert Loeb ( www.galerieloeb.com ) in Paris in 2008, was Paul who helped convince Albert Loeb (who came from a family of merchants of Picasso and Matisse) to be charged € 1725 (about $ 2,200 per today's exchange rate) for my photos of Chicago.
"I will send some of my pictures made air combat in Paris in the Second World War? "I asked." And some lovely candids of a beautiful American girl alone with the 'Mona Lisa'? "
"No, my dear friend," Albert said without hesitation. "Our collectors of Paris are more interested in their views of Cheecago not Paris. Paris know about Cheecago wonder. "
We have sold about half of the photos, and orders are still trickling in – especially dorsal famous for my naked candor Simone de Beauvoir, who was my friend Nelson Algren is Cheecago girlfriend. Press French (in the form of a cover of Le Nouvel Observateur) and a New Yorker on the image helped sales without end, so to speak.
(Ironically, my wonderful archivist DeGlopper Erica recently found several nude photos front bathroom that had made Simone, but not planned for release until my death. Erica and my collection were honored by the Association of American Archivists in the May / June edition of the Archives of Outlook.)
As it happens, the formidable editor Eric Vieljeux 13e Note of Éditions (Note 13 editions) and I have a handshake to treat a small French book next year, telling the story behind my naked image of the great philosopher and, according to Algren, novelist terrible. He reviewed his book "The Mandarins" (Supposedly talks about her great love story of Chicago) in Harper's, and pointed out that the lady had invaded their privacy.
"I've been in whorehouses all over the world and even in the Far East have the decency to lower the blinds," said Algren.
(When Simone phoned from France to Algren berate her for her negative criticism, asked if he had enjoyed his love as much as she replied, "Yes, but I was not discussing the shit, I was reviewing the book of shit. ")
One of the rarest dishes on my table now is a plan for Johnny Depp in the film, de Beauvoir Algren Chicago love story. Depp is considering exercising his beautiful French wife, Vanessa Paradis, as Simone, and has hired Swedish director Lasse Hallström. This is for 2011, the film seems to be shot in Chicago after Depp another pirate movie ends. His agent says that "Johnny will be in touch with you."
(Hollywood has its own clock and calendar. In this sense, My wife gave me grief Joseph Heller's humorous book on his adventures with the movie people with mouth-morrow that kept him in a series of 15 months of embers even after you get your money.)
Depp's agent has sent my two books about Algren and has now bought two of my pictures Algren de Beauvoir, framing, and Depp has given his birthday, reports that the actor likes.
So now, with collectors of my entertainment, I can Depp add to rocker Billy Corgan, the actors Jennifer Aniston, John Cusack and William Petersen, and my old friend, the late Marcel Marceau. Oh – and one of my favorites of collectors and the author of the introductions of two of my books: David Mamet. David says he is encouraged when it comes down to her desk to work in the morning "and I see the image of Maxwell Street in the early morning hanging over my desk. I used live there. "David recently asked permission to use the same image on the cover of his autobiography next. He compared my photos to homeless people used to pull the sleeve.
I maybe made a mistake with the master prankster joke Mamet. I helped him to "pick up" a World War II Kodak Retina III was the kind of camera Mamet owned and lost long ago. Is periodically sent me a moment or two to criticism. A very good self-portrait of David in a mirror, he replied: "OK, but do not give up your day job." No reply came back, so guess I'll stick to the photos and dismiss criticism of humor.
Another favorite of collectors – which includes images of birds, and my dirty points view of Chicago, whose nickname is Birdman – led me to the recent Art Institute of Chicago exhibition of Henri Cartier-Bresson. I found a great display box 500, but only some very few photos filled me with a feeling of joy. (In this area I like the image of two strollers compositional human repeat the two statues in the bottom structure.) Albert Loeb, in his recent visit to Paris, she said, "I knew and I know Bresson. He is a cold man. The pictures are much hotter and has a great rapport with them. "
Of course, Loeb himself is an amiable man of the arts and a friend. He attributes the heat in my work to my being Jewish. Maybe. Also attributed to my love life visceral and my understanding of the insistence of death. I learned to fly 52 combat missions in my B-24, Sweet Sue, in the Second World War. And with the anguish that comes with having my oldest son, Harmon Shay, who was killed at age 21. And even with his body back from the swamps of Florida, where he allegedly died in 1972. Florence and spirit I have four children: Richard Herbert, Herbert and Lauren Shay Lavin Steve are much-published photo-journalists and our "daughter," the lawyer, Jane Shay Wald, an intellectual property attorney, was recently named by Super Lawyers magazine to its 2010 "100 Best Lawyers" list for Southern California.
My wife, Florence, knows better pick than me: She is the owner of the renowned antiquarian bookstore world titles, Inc., Highland Park, Illinois collector Florence, clients have included the Chicago Bear, a Chicago Bull, Billy Corgan, David Mamet, 11-time champion professional wrestler Bret Hitman Hart, two governors unjail Illinois and many others. Continued (if that's the phrase) a correspondence with Joseph Heller – one of his favorite authors – and so has an extensive collection of first signed editions of "Catch-22."
One of the glories of the sale to collectors usually do not have much of a track of your tastes … This week I'm pulling some impressions of Life magazine photos of Hula Hula society ladies at Michigan Avenue, in the sixties and as some recorded for a prominent law firm in Chicago Chicagoana collection. Like my photo of the first Mayor Richard Daley exulting in a forum in front of City Hall, the celebration of the 1957 Chicago White Sox pennant with his son, current mayor of Chicago itself. My old friend and subject, Bill Veeck, owner of the Red Sox, is the height of the Daleys. Veeck was baseball that fireworks set off first run at home. This helped to light the night sky for my first Sports Illustrated cover, the July 4, 1960. (Attention collectors Baseball: Somewhere in real Veeck is my impression should remain – Autographed Minnie Minoso, who hit the home run precipitated the fireworks. But unfortunately, I have.)
Did not become aware that people pick up my photos until years later when a of my first collection, a restaurant in Chicago, bought my image of Muhammad Ali (Cassius Clay at the time still) the cancellation of Alex Miteff in Louisville in 1961. The restorative gave it to her then partner, Michael Jordan, the famous "Room" to his unfortunate LaSalle Street restaurant. Jordan heard praise my picture on the wall on opening night. Michael had gotten the impression Ali autograph signing next to my pride. I'm sure that will appear in one collection a day long ago – possibly in the house of one of Jordan's handsome, smart kids who know sports.
My royalty check – bless – Time Inc. this month include the payment of my famous photo of Ray Kroc in the sixties, eating a hamburger in front of his first McDonald's in Des Plaines, Illinois (My gallery has a single 4 x 5-foot framed copy of Kroc picture that cost me $ 900 to frame. My man gallery, Paul, is to come to McDonald's to buy the print, on the wall in the mine. better) The same check cover photos of Arnold Palmer, winner of the Masters in 1960, some picketing Teamsters year-old last survivor-108 of the Civil War (Union side) and Dolly Parton.
Time Options Inc. 's image have always been an enigma. Now use these secondary sales are channeled through Getty Images. Last year a friend of mine in the Polaris Images photo agency discovered that a New York hotel chain, was using my back of Simone naked to illustrate his dinner menu. The chain came up with a considerable sum for an out of court. Admen hotel apparently thought he would not mind or was dead.
Wow, I have only 88!
By the way, I've had over 1,000 photos covers all of Ford Motor Company and annual reports 3M to magazines such as Time, Life, Fortune, The New York Sunday Times Magazine and Sports Illustrated all plugs I have published 50 books. (Well, it was a cover, but four years ago, the New York Times Magazine published six of the pictures I took of my own surgery the heart before moving on "in" – as his back-page "Lives" feature. Even used a photo of Florence.)
Two of my works have been produced professionally: "A clock Nikita" in 1963 and "Where have you gone, Jimmy Stewart?" four years ago. (Stewart was my squadron commander of the Air Force, although I did not fly with him. "Nikita" was a Russian who designed creative an alarm clock that played Tchaikovsky and woke up happy workers … and what about a free spirit in a closed society …)
I can not decide whether to send actor Johnny Depp, the lush Tracey Jacobs, two of my efforts have not produced a play about the love story-Simone Nelson large. She might advise me not to quit my day job.
