Focus on Art Shay

Headquarters in Chicago, famous photographer, Art Shay, a nimble 88, collects his thoughts on the collection, collectors and how their world-class collection was to be picked

A few months ago I bought in a couple of books through distance phone call along a very nice lady named Florence who owns a bookstore in Highland Park, Illinois, called titles, Inc. that sells rare books. That is because Article Shay – One of whose photos are on the jacket of the first edition of "A Walk on the Wild Side" – is one of the greatest photographers of the last century and this, too. Now, 88 years, is a native of Art Bronx and served as chief navigator aboard a B-24 Liberator flying missions in Europe during the Second World War (and twice helped lead the entire Eighth Army Air Force – 1,200 aircraft – to Berlin a week after D-Day), but also sailed out of action for the first flight from Guam to Tokyo after the Japanese surrender, which General Douglas MacArthur's personal advancement to Tokyo to organize GHQ and occupation.

A photographer looks at his work – and their collectors
