Realism in Contemporary Art
Despite the many styles and art movements of the 20 th century, from minimalism to Dada to Abstract Expressionism, realistic portrait of the subject always seemed to be floating in the shadows, ever-present constant in the history of art. And in the 21 st century begins, the realism is established to move to the forefront once again. Representational art is leading the world around us in the canvas, but a language that even those who are ignorant of art can be appreciate.
If you follow the history of Western art, you see that in larger trends, which has alternated between phases of representation and no representation, starting with the semi-abstract work, such as prehistoric cave paintings of Spain and France, then in flower completely realistic sculpture and murals of Rome and Greece. Then return to the stylized images, symbols of the Middle Ages, followed by a return to naturalism in Renaissance and Baroque periods. This emphasis on Realism continued until the advent of photography in the 19 th century, which helped usher in impressionism, pointillism and others. The culmination of this trend was Abstract Expressionism and other modernist movements which emphasized the total disregard the matter.
Although works have been in more modern styles, I found the traditional realism to be the best vehicle for my goals as an artist. And it's lucky too, as the realism and figurative work is regaining prominence dominant in Western art. Of course, it never really vanished, like the painters Lucian Freud and David Hockney have demonstrated in their careers. It was also evident, different ways, the work of artists usually associated with other movements, like the surrealist Salvador Dali.
The general trend in modern times has been the simplification of the visual elements that make up matter. This began with the Impressionists and continued through the abstract impressionists. But how where to simplify the issue? For a blank canvas? To avoid painting at all? There is a point at which the modern artist has to rediscover the inherent value of aesthetic reality.
A cow suspended in a tank of formaldehyde or splash of elephant dung on the Virgin Mary are dead "artistic manifestations." They pose the same question that the artist Marcel Duchamp when he painted a urinal, turned upside down and called it art. Duchamp's act was significant in the beginning of the century XX, but forces us to question what constitutes art. Now it's just redundant.
It has always been some human characteristics associated with beauty. We admire the murals of Pompeii Roman, the Japanese woodblock prints and the Mona Lisa, even though they are centuries old. We can relate to these works teachers, I think, because we can more easily see ourselves in these images. future generations will find these qualities in the Holy Mother smeared in animal excrement? Or Yoko Ono small black dot in a big white wall? Should not be the skill in the art, and lasting value that can be appreciated over time.
Andrew Wyeth created the job in a realistic style, throughout his career, and his paintings are echoed by the critics and the public, regardless of current trends in art. Although Wyeth's paintings in a realistic way, is considered one of the greatest American artists of the twentieth century.
In any field, not just art, admire the work showing that the person responsible for putting the time, thought, effort and skill in their creation. The best abstract expressionist paintings show great thought and an overview of design principles, and should be admired for that. However, to compare the amount of effort and technical skill put into it, with that involved in a work of Rembrandt and Rubens makes no sense.
The key to a great painting is its visual quality — think about that statement. This is so obvious to the non-artist however, many modern artists have become so lost in conceptual thinking that they have forgotten the most important thing about a work of visual art: it should be interesting see!
I know an artist who was obsessed with creating a work that would move contemporary art in an entirely new direction. He covered a canvas with a uniform layer of colored dots of paint, creating a similar appearance to confetti. There are no forms or patterns emerged from these points, the overall effect was soft and bland. The artist said that a work like this could only be done once, I would go further and say that a work as could be seen only once! There was no no long-term value to it, without the complexity or depth, there is no reason for the viewer to reconsider the future work.
Do not get me wrong – I I'm a fan of much of modern art. But there is a limit to how far an artist can actually simplify a topic to its essence and yet the interest the viewer, at some point, the only way to go is backwards, back to a more representative.
Yes, as champions of realism over abstraction; always refers to the time. And I think that realism will soon regain a dominant position in Western art, then it is likely to return to a certain degree of abstraction, in the continuation of the cycle we've seen since prehistoric times. The realism and abstraction are actually two sides of a coin, an abstract work is only one version Simplified a realist, and a realistic work is simply a more developed version of an abstract. But realism has always been the foundation, and doubtless soon return to dominate the visual arts once again.
